Rinaldo is an Indonesian artist living and working in Bali, Indonesia. With multidisciplinary backgrounds in graphic design, illustration, and printmaking, Rinaldo explores Jungian archetypes, esotericism, mythology, and folklore from Indonesia and all over the world.
His ongoing body of work explores
amok, an English loanword from Malay/
Indonesia meaning to rampage or to
run berserk. Since the 16th century,
European traders in the Malay world
have documented cases of amok, from
berserk individuals to mass riots,
describing it as a culturally bound
phenomenon.
In the body of work, the phenomenon
is visualised by erupting volcanoes,
a display of nature’s might that has
been bringing destruction for many
generations. Moreover, while volcanoes
bring destruction, they are also vital
In sustaining agricultural communities
by providing fertility to the soil. In
parallel, amok has an ambivalent force
not only in fueling mass riots but also
in driving movements and
societal changes.
Rinaldo currently works as Associate Printmaker at Black Hand Gang Printmaking Studio.
